Perry-Port-Salem Rescue
Perry-Port-Salem Rescue Squad
(PPS) was formed in 1975. Our squad serves the residents of
Perry and Salem Townships, which includes Port Jefferson.
We also serve the residents of the northern portion of Green
Township.
The first chief of the squad
was Wayne Glass Sr. Marion Carey also played a large role
in the formation of the unit. The current chief is Scott Roddy
who also serves with the Shelby County Fire Department as do
several of the PPS members. A majority of our members also run with Port Jefferson Fire Company.
The squad is funded by an Ambulance District
that receives funds through a tax levy. That, however, is
a recent method. Years ago, the squad was funded only by money
they could raise themselves. Fund raising events such a bingo
were used to fund equipment and pay for training.
Over the years the squad has grown both in
the number of calls and the number of volunteers. In 2001,
Perry-Port-Salem Rescue responded to 221 calls for assistance.
In 2002 this number was 223 and in 2003 it was 235. These
services are provided through the efforts of about 25 volunteers.
These people donate their time and skills, with no pay.
